Understanding Stress, its Harmful Effects, and the Best Ways to Cope and de-stress

Have you ever wondered about stress and what it really is? Stress is defined as a reaction that disturbs our physical or mental balance. It is an ever-present part of life brought on by frustrations, deadlines and demands.

For many of us, stress is so ‘normal’ that it has become a way of life. Stress can damage your health, mood, relationships, and quality of life.

What does stress do to your body?

Stress is your body’s response to any kind of demand or threat. So when you feel threatened, your nervous system responds by doing any or all of the following:

  • Releases a flood of stress hormones which rouse the body for emergency action.
  • Your heart pounds faster,
  • muscles tighten,
  • blood pressure rises,
  • breath quickens,

Effects of ‘Stress Overload’

If you’re stressed over an argument, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body can misjudge the level of stress and react as if you’re facing a life-or-death situation and have the following effects:

  • raise blood pressure,
  • suppress the immune system,
  • increase the risk of serious illness,
  • speed up the aging process etc.

Here is a very quick list of signs and symptoms of stress overload. How many can you count that are familiar to you?
  • Unable to remember simple things
  • Constant worrying
  • Moodiness
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Frequent colds
  • Aches and pains in the body
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)

We usually think of stressors or stress triggers as being negative, such as an exhausting work schedule or a rocky relationship. The truth is that anything that puts high demands on you or forces you to adjust can be stressful. This includes events such as getting married, buying a house, going to college, or even receiving a promotion.

How to positively manage stress

  • Engage socially - The simple act of putting your phone away and simply talking face to face with another human being can reduce stress
  • Get moving - Physical activity plays a key role in managing stress. Walking, running, swimming, dancing, and aerobic classes are good choices to de-stress!
  • Holidays - time away from work and chores
  • Switch off your phone - Yes, really! Your body needs a recharge too!

Lifestyle changes also help deal with the symptoms of stress
You can also better cope with stress by strengthening your physical health.

  • Relaxation time. Yoga, meditation, and deep breathing activate the body’s relaxation response, a state of restfulness.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Well-nourished bodies are better prepared to cope with stress.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Feeling tired can increase. Keep your cool in stressful situations by getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Have ‘Me Time’ – Time spent in a spa with friends or even pampering yourself alone is never wasted.

If you are super stressed, make time for a few hours per week at the spa, so you can have a foot rub, massage or even a head rub. This really helps in quickly relaxing and rejuvenating your system.

Spa Ceylon has produced an unique array of de-stressing and calming products infused with frankincense, kaffir lime, sandalwood, tangerines and aloe-vera for you to indulge in at home and office.

The Spa Ceylon Harmonizing Essence Mist is one of the authors’ personal favourites.  After a bath or shower, spray on lightly, all over your body, pillows and bed linen. The age old remedy of using frankincense to calm and destress goes back many millennia and is still used today to help the body find harmony and balance. The components of these precious ingredients are blended with the idea of bringing about complete wellness and a state of restfulness in body and mind.

Soothing Pain Relievers - by Spa Ceylon

Soothing herbal compresses are a time-honoured healing therapy recommended in Ayurveda for effective relief from body pains, skin problems & dosha imbalances. Packed with goodness, warmed pouches containing Ayurveda herbs, plants, roots, and more, have been applied to sore, sprained or tired bodies for centuries. Classified as a Swedanam (Sanskrit for sweat therapy) in the Vedic texts, the herbal compress is both detoxifying & healing.

Specially selected therapeutic ingredients are tied tightly in natural cloth, steamed for a few minutes, then dipped in medicated herbal oils or massage balms & applied to the body. On application, the heat induces sweating, thereby helping to bring toxins to the surface of the skin. It follows then, that once the pores are open; skin absorbs the properties of the herbs for healing.

Herbal compresses have proven so popular over the centuries that the fame of this fast acting therapy has spread to other cultures too. Today, many South East Asian herbal health care practices rely on the herbal compress to relieve sore muscles and joint pains.

Traditional Herbal Compress
Spa Ceylon offers a range of traditional herbal compresses in several sizes, designed to suit the individual dosha types and also offers a unique black sesame compress to soothe severe body aches. While smaller compresses are designed to be used for facial & forehead massage, medium sizes are recommended for scalp and foot massage, with the larger compresses designed for use in full body treatments, especially back & shoulder areas.

Heat Activate!
For best results place the Herbal Compress in a steamer for 15 minutes to heat activate ingredients. If time is an issue, spray on some water to moisten compress and pop it into your microwave for 30 seconds for fast-action heat therapy. Then apply a suitable treatment balm on areas to be treated & massage with Herbal Compress for 15 minutes. While compresses can be re-used upto 10 times, refrigerated storage is recommended after use.

Black Sesame Pain Reliever
This is great for soothing natural pain relief for muscular tension, stiffness, joint aches & pains.  The blend of Black Sesame, Lemongrass, Black Seed & Black Pepper contained in the compress helps treat inflammations & minor skin irritations while effectively calming & de-stressing body & mind.

Back Pain Reliever
Inspired by traditional herbal compress therapies, the therapeutic properties of this herb-filled back cushion help improve circulation to soothe severe lower back pain, joint swelling & tense muscles. It is packed with Wild Turmeric, Crepe Ginger, Calumba Wood, Nutmeg, Bitter Lime, Wild Rice & Camphor to calm your overall body system, promote your internal body balances & provide soothing comfort for back pains.

Body Compress – Body Wrap
Another great pain reliever, the body compress can be wrapped on to treat different painful areas of the body. The heat activated herbal action helps improve circulation to soothe severe lower back pain, joint swelling & tense muscles, while also helping to comfort menstrual pains, relieve sports injuries & overcome general fatigue.

Since time immemorial Asian well-being rituals have included the anointing of aromatic & medicinal balms for a myriad of purposes - from body pains to colds to coughs & even for relief from travel fatigue, poor health or just cold weather.

In the Indian subcontinent, balms infused with the goodness of powerful Ayurveda herbs & natural essential oils were a mainstay of day to day life in ancient times. In the Chinese regions the influence of traditional Chinese medicine gave way to powerful red coloured balms infused with pungent herbs native to that region.

Tender Loving Care for Feet

Although you may end up with tired, painful feet at the end of the day, giving your feet some TLC – tender loving care - can transport you into realms of pleasure. Feet are one of the most sensual and sensitive parts of your body, and a loving touch applied here can be wonderfully relaxing, energizing or stimulating.

Self-treatment is wonderfully soothing. However, nothing you do to yourself can quite match the sensation of leaning back and letting someone else do the work. There is something utterly relaxing about having your feet massaged; tension seems to drain out of the whole body almost as though a tap had been opened. Perhaps because the feet are so far away from your head, it feels easy to let your mind release worries and anxieties too.  So, if you’ve got the time, check in to a good foot spa for an ayurveda foot ritual treatment that will soothe your spirits and restore your soul.

Simple self –Massage
Self-treatment is also great way of learning massage, because you have your own physical response to guide you. It is important to get yourself into a relaxed position; you should not need to twist your back or the knee in order to reach the foot. If you are comfortable, you will find it much easier to detect the subtle differences between different strokes and types of pressure, and your reactions to them. You will instantly know when you have got the technique right, and when your touch is sufficiently sensitive and pleasing.

Different Strokes
When giving yourself foot massage, take the opportunity to experiment. Try out different strokes, levels of pressure and combinations of the two. What you like can also change depending on your mood and the part of the foot being worked. As a general rule:
  • Fast strokes are stimulating and energizing.
  • Slow rhythmic strokes have a calming & relaxing effect.
  • Deep pressure can be used to release muscular tension, relieve stress or to enhance vitality.
  • Gentle pressure is soothing and has a calming effect on both your mind and your body.

Involve Your Partner
A relaxing foot massage is a wonderful gift to be able to offer others. It’s also worth persuading your partner to learn a short routine, so that you can benefit from it.  Anyone can learn simple massage strokes, even if they have never learned massage techniques before. Giving & receiving soothing foot massages with your partner is a great bonding experience and also means relationship enriching ‘quality time’ spent together.

Calming Movements
Incorporating a few extra movements, aromatic natural oils, cooling foot creams and even a mint scented relaxing foot soak helps to heighten the effects & convert your massage into a longer pamper treatment for the feet. Peppermint with Lemongrass (for cooling) and Ginger with Spice (for warming) are excellent soothing blends to use. Take some time to relax afterwards too – perhaps with a cup of herbal tea.

Start-up Massage
Ayurveda sages believed that a daily massage was one of the best ways of keeping the body healthy. Few of us have time for a full treatment, but a quick self-massage for the feet is a great way to start the day.  A simple foot massage can be designed to be relaxing yet invigorating – a real wake-up call.

Re-charge Time
Most of us don’t have enough time in our lives to relax and recharge. Ideally, we should stop and rest whenever we feel tired or low in energy, but we often need to keep going because of work, home or social commitments.  If you don’t have time to sneak into a good foot spa between your daily commitments, a home foot massage routine can be designed to soothe and revitalize at the same time. Use it as an instant pick-me-up whenever you happen to be - great for days when you can’t stop – but feel you can’t go on.

Silent Moments
When you are giving or receiving you home foot massage, try to work in silence – a few minutes of calm can help to increase the restorative effect of the massage.

Learn Massage

All that is needed for a simple self-massage treatment is an understanding of a few basic strokes.  After that, it is a matter of practice so that you become comfortable with the different techniques involved.

A good night’s sleep - with Spa Ceylon

We all love sleep! Sleep is a relaxing, restful luxury that soothes the senses, calms the mind and heals the body. Yet, getting a good night’s sleep sometimes eludes most of us in this era of rushed modern urban lifestyles. Daily stress, the uncertainty of tomorrow, the internet, that great movie on cable or the agony of a break up – all these & more - keep us up at night. That’s why a good night’s sleep is becoming more and more a luxurious indulgence!

If you are one of those finding it difficult to get a good night’s sleep, a good bed-time routine certainly does help you to get to sleep faster & also to sleep well for longer. It is a part of what health professionals term as “sleep hygiene” and helps you to prepare psychologically & physically for sleep. A routine is a way of ordering simple daily tasks & behavioral patterns into a meaningful sequence. If you have great difficulty in establishing such a routine, it is best to seek help.

Good Sleep Hygiene Habits
Try to establish sleep hygiene habits that suit you and your needs. The following list of tips may help you:

  • Avoid caffeine, tobacco and alcohol late in the day.
  • Eat the last meal of the day at least 2 hours before bedtime.
  • Cut down or avoid fluids at least an hour before bedtime.
  • Avoid stimulating environments after sunset.
  • Engage in exercise but avoid vigorous activity too close to bedtime.
  • Don’t watch television in bed.
  • Establish a bedtime routine
  • Create a bedroom environment that enhances sleep.
  • Go to bed only if you are sleepy.
  • Don’t worry in bed; try to think relaxing thoughts.
  • If you can’t get to sleep within 15-20 minutes, get out of bed and do a quiet activity until you’re sleepy.
  • Get up at the same time every day.
  • Avoid day time naps.
  • Take a warm relaxing bath or shower before bed time.
  • Give yourself time to relax before retiring and use relaxation techniques.

Relaxation Techniques
Relaxation is an important part of preparing for sleep, but there is no best way – you must choose what suits you. There are many forms of relaxation therapy & most are easy for you to do yourself. Progressive muscle relaxation is one useful technique, where you tense and then relax different muscle groups in turn. Some people find listening to soothing music or relaxation tapes helpful.  A long warm bath or shower with relaxing aroma oils before bed-time also helps you unwind, so that your mind & body are at ease, helping you to drift-off to sleep faster.

Spa Ceylon Sleep Therapy
Spa Ceylon has developed a new range of bath & body care formulae specifically designed to help you relax, unwind & soothe your senses - giving you wonderfully peaceful sleep within 15 to 30 minutes after application.  The range combines Ayurveda & aromatherapy to deliver the god given natural benefits of aromatic herbs to help enrich your life.

Pure Essential Oils
The secret to the calming action is the unique combination of organic essential oils of lavender, ylang ylang, patchouli, lemon & lime – blended to perfection, creating a total sensory experience for your body & mind.

Best of Nature
The products are also enriched with organically grown aloe vera, nutrient-rich virgin coconut oil, avocado, olive and other herbs to deliver overnight moisturizing hydration, nourishment & protection to your skin.

The range includes calming bath soak, bath & shower gel, bath & massage oil, hydrating body butter, body milk, aroma essential oil blend, body & pillow mist & aromatic natural candles & travel sets as well.

Royal Hair Rituals by Spa Ceylon

Women of the Royal courts of our Indian sub-continent were especially renowned for their dark, thick and lustrous locks, emphasizing how we have always treasured glowing beautiful hair as an integral sign of an individual’s health & beauty.

In fact, they are said to have hand blended fresh plants, fruits and herbs and applied them directly to their hair for centuries. Ancient Ayurveda texts contain numerous references to treatments, rinses, lotions, infusions & pastes for beautifying, strengthening and improving hair health.  Today Spa Ceylon Ayurveda captures these traditional practices in their range of luxuriously indulgent aromatic natural formulae, delivering a royal pampering experience for your hair & scalp.

Head Massage
In addition to pampering, Ayurveda head massage affects not only the immediate areas massaged; it is a healing, rejuvenating and thoroughly stimulating experience as well. These rituals not only cover your head, but also the upper back, shoulders, neck, scalp & face too. In much the same way that Traditional Chinese Medicine dictates that certain points on the feet are directly aligned to internal organs, Ayurveda texts relate certain parts of the head to other body parts and symptoms or diseases. Extending from 30 to 60 minutes, Ayurveda head massages are also great to improve hair growth, reduce hair loss & condition hair, as well as calm & soothe the nervous system, as hair roots are connected to nerve fibers.

The choice of oil plays a very important role in any head massage.  Traditional Ayurveda formulations of scalp & hair treatment oils help to cool, soothe, nourish & treat a range of scalp, hair & health problems, while Aromaveda scalp massage oils blended with natural essential oils help to calm, relax & balance your senses as well as soften, nourish & fragrance your hair. The choice of oils should be according to your dosha type and your hair & scalp needs. Choose from cooling Aloe Vera Water grass, soothing Neroli Jasmine or warming Sandalwood Vetiver to enjoy a greatly relaxing head & scalp massage.

Hair Fragrance
Wearing fragrant flowers for special occasions and scenting the hair with incense while it is being dried are traditions that have been practiced by Indian womenfolk to perfume their hair for centuries.  Burning charcoal mixed with frankincense was the ancient equivalent of a hair dryer - it helped with drying the hair, imparting fragrance & preventing hair problems.  Luxurious pampering from a bygone era, the ritual of hair fragrance is adapted to modern lifestyles with Spa Ceylon’s easy absorbent light hair oil mists finely perfumed with essential oils - to pamper & protect.

Spa Ceylon Hair Care
Spa Ceylon’s hair spa range is enriched with 100% natural Ayurveda herbs & pure organic essential oils to restore scalp & hair balance. Formulated in 3dosha specific variants - Neroli Jasmine (Vaatha), Aloe Vera Water grass (Piththa) & Sandalwood Vetiver (Kapha). Choose from Scalp & Hair Cleansers, Hair Conditioners, Scalp & Hair Treatment Oils, Scalp Massage Oils & Hair Oil Mists - to treat soothe calm & balance your body, mind & soul.
